Prices for Apple’s new iPad Pro tablets start at £619 and both are on sale today
Powered by its new iOS 11, Apple has unveiled two new models in its iPad Pro line-up.
Joining the 9.7-inch model are the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro designs, available today. The announcement was made at WWDC 2017, in San Jose, where further reveals included the Siri-powered HomePod speaker, new Macbooks and iMac and new macOS.
Apple’s new iPads
Both the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch edition come with so-called ProMotion technology said to give the tablets “the world’s most advanced display.” ProMotion is said to automatically adjust the display to the movement of the content and runs on an advanced iPad Pro Retina display. It gives refresh rates of up to 120Hz, which makes scrolling smoother and boosts how responsive the touchscreen is to fingers, as well as the Apple Pencil. Apple claims the technology additionally reduces power consumption because it responds to what’s on the screen and adjusts refresh rates accordingly.
The advanced Retina display comes with antireflective coating and True Tone technology that adjusts the white balance of the display to match the light around you “for a more natural and accurate viewing experience”.
Inside the new iPad Pro range is a 64-bit A10X Fusion Chip. The six-core CPU and 12-core GPU promise up to 30 per cent faster CPU performance and 40 per cent faster graphics performance than the previous A9X chip, as well as all-day battery life (which Apple is quick to clarify depends on usage and device settings.)
The new iPad Pro range has the same front- and back-facing cameras as the iPhone 7 – a 12MP camera with optical image stabilisation on the back and a 7MP FaceTime HD camera. iPad Pro additionally has a four-speaker audio system.
iOS 11 on the new iPad Pro
Among the many new features of iOS 11 is a selection of iPad-specific updates, namely a new Files app and the ability to drag and drop text, photos and files from one app to another.
These join a new customisable Dock, better multitasking, including a redesigned app switcher, a new document scanner in Notes, which lets users easily scan single or multi-page documents, and support for inline drawing to write along text in Notes and Mail with the Apple Pencil.
